Long Island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, East River and Long Island Sound, which allows for a host of recreational and leisurely activities. Massapequa is located to the east of the large Tackapausha Preserve County Park which features more than 77 acres of wildlife preserve. Within this preserve are a museum and several trails for nature walks. In addition, there are two parks in Massapequa - the waterfront John J. Burns Town Park and the Marjorie R. Post Community Park. The Massapequa State Park nearby provides camping, hiking and picnic areas. For the golf enthusiasts - the Peninsula Golf Club offers 18 holes of championship golf and is located in the nearby Village of Massapequa Park. Several other excellent golf courses are located throughout the area.
The community is home to a number of historical attractions such as the tombstone of Major Thomas Jones, the town’s first non-Indian settler, which dates back to 1713 and the ‘Old’ Grace Episcopal Church, which dates back to 1844. In addition, there are several parks nearby that provide waterfront/beach access.
Massapequa offers residents an excellent choice of both public and private schools. Students attend schools within the Massapequa State School System (District 23) or within the Farmingdale System (District 22). Together, these school districts offer four elementary schools, one junior high school and two high schools. There are also several private and parochial schools available.
