For higher education, there are a variety of opportunities in the surrounding areas. Located in Garden City is the Nassau Community College, a two-year public school that awards associate degrees and certificates for specific programs. Many of the nearby four-year universities are parochial and/or private institutions such as the Long Island University CW Post - the eighth largest independent, non-profit university in the U.S. that awards doctoral degrees. Other schools include State University of New York at Old Westbury, Molloy College and the New York College. There are also numerous colleges and universities in the New York City area.
There are many shopping centers in and around the Massapequa community. The shopping centers in the area will take care of your everyday needs. For a larger mall experience, the Sunrise Mall located on the Sunrise Highway has more than 160 retail stores.
The history of the area dates back to the early Native American Indians. The name Massapequa is taken from the Indian group that originally inhabited the land, the Marsapeagues. The Indian word ‘Massapeauke’ -- which translates to “Great Water Land” -- suits Massapequa’s south shore location and the many man-made lakes that are located within the area.
Today, this scenic community continues to grow while it strives to maintain its historical roots. Residents have the best of both worlds with a laid-back Long Island lifestyle, but just minutes from all the big city amenities of the city that never sleeps.
